Is Fancy Dog Food Necessary
from: Kyle BesserVeterinarians can help advise you about dog food and the nutritional needs of a dog, but often veterinarians recommend a food sold in their veterinary hospital or clinic. Dog sports enthusiasts are often much more up on trends in dog food nutrition than many veterinarians because they demand more of their dogs than most of the clients a veterinarian will see.
Dog sports enthusiasts want glossy coats on their show dogs and energy to burn from their field, agility or obedience dogs. Dog sports enthusiasts are always looking for an edge in competition. This makes them good people to talk to when it comes to choosing dog food.
Keep in mind, however, that dog sport competitors can be a little too trendy when it comes to dog food. Dog sports enthusiasts are often big on supplementing prepared formulas as well as vitamins, vegetables, raw meat and herbal concoctions. This is just not necessary for the normal nutritional needs of a dog whose primary job is household pet and companion.
Some supplements may even be dangerous, depending on what's being added. If you don't know what you are doing, don't do it. Buy a top quality dog food and leave it at that. If you have questions, ask your veterinarian.
Don't think the dog food is dull if it is just plain brown. Fancy shapes and chunks of meat or cheese or bits made to look like meat or cheese are there for the benefit of the dog owner. As long as dog food smells good, your dog doesn't care what it looks like. Our idea of appetizing is not the same as our dogs.
Dogs don't judge dog food by its looks. These eye pleasing touches for people will not hurt your dog unless they are too high in sugar, fat or salt, but they are not something you need to seek out, and you certainly shouldn't pay extra for them.
Some people just don't believe a dog can be happy with plain kibble, even a top quality kibble. If it makes you feel better, add some canned dog food. You can add a little water and microwave it briefly. You will likely get the enthusiastic response you're looking for, but it is not necessary. Before you start feeding this way, however, consider that if you should ever want to travel with your dog or need to leave him with your veterinarian, at a boarding kennel, or with a sitter or friend, the dog will do better if it is used to eating plain kibble.
