Go For The Premium Dry Dog Food

When choosing between dry dog food, canned dog food or semi-moist dog food, your dog will probably do just fine with whatever choice you make. Dry dog foods offer the advantages of economy and convenience, but not all dogs like them. Canned dog food and semi-moist dog foods are more pleasing to most dogs, but they are more expensive and some have sugars that aren't necessary for your dog's nutrition.

Even though most dogs prefer canned dog food, if you start your puppy on dry dog food, you shouldn't have a problem. Finicky eating is a behavior that is mostly taught by humans.

While you are house training a puppy or dog, you may want to feed dry dog food only, at least until the task of house training is accomplished. The water content in canned dog foods can make a puppy or dog need to urinate more frequently. This is especially important if your dog or puppy is left home alone for several hours at a time, like while you're at work.

If you prefer canned dog food, you can always change after the puppy is a little older and able to hold it longer or your adult dog understands completely what your house rules are. Chewing dry dog foods helps keep your dog's teeth cleaner. If you brush your dog's teeth and have them cleaned regularly, your dog's teeth should be fine with other types of dog food.

Many prefer to feed appropriate, premium kibble from reputable dog food manufacturers, and nothing else. Appropriate means puppy dog food for puppies, dog food with lower fat and protein for older or overweight dogs, and performance dog food for highly active dogs.

Why should you choose a premium kibble? Premium kibble is a little more expensive than some other dry dog foods, but premium kibble is still competitive when compared to canned dog food or semi-moist dog food. Premium kibble has more digestable dog food ingredients and also results in a lower volume of stools than is produced by many other dry dog foods. These concerns are not major if you have a little dog such as a Chihuahua, but they may be if you have a Great Dane.

Ask your veterinarian or other animal care professional, groomer, trainer or reputable breeder, for a recommendation. Stick to it once you are satisfied it is working well for your dog. Dogs don't need variety, and they don't get bored with the same dog food ration day after day. When a healthy dog is a picky eater, it is usually because the owner taught him to be that way by adding tempting tidbits at the least sign of reluctance to eat.
