All About Demodectic Mange

from: Kyle Besser

Demodectic mange, which is also called Demodicosis or Red Mange, is a skin disorder caused by the Demodex canis mite. Mites are very tiny parasites that can only be detected by means of a microscope. Demodex canis mite can produce skin and hair problems on your dog which can lead to serious problems and require immediate treatment.

The demodex canis mite is an elongated eight-legged parasite that is commonly believed to occur naturally in all dogs, living in their hair follicles. Puppies often acquire these mites from their mother.

Demodectic mange, which is also known as red mange, usually results when the Demodex canis mites begin an intense period of propagation. Demodectic mange from the demodex canis mite is categorized in two forms: localized or generalized.

Localized Demodectic Mange

Localized Demodectic mange usually affects dogs during their first year of life. The term localized is used because the mites that are responsible for causing the infection are confined to specific areas of your dog's body. You can tell if your dog has localized Demodectic mange if you notice small bald patches on his face, forelegs and around his eyes. Although this type of mite problem usually goes away by itself without any medical help, it is still better to consult your vet.

The symptoms caused by the demodex canis mite is very similar to the symptoms of ringworm and it is very easy for most people to get confused between the two skin problems. If your puppy experiences an outbreak of Demodectic mange, it is possible that the puppy has a weak immune system and therefore should be seen by a vet.

Generalized Demodectic Mange

Generalized Demodectic mange affects both puppies and dogs and can occur at any age. The term generalized is used because in this case, the mites are spread all over the dog's body. This can lead to a more serious and sometimes a life-threatening problem for your dog.

The symptoms that your dog is suffering from Generalized Demodectic mange is the rapid and widespread growth of bald patches throughout the coat. The patches soon become infected with pus formation.

Immediately consult your vet as soon as you notice the symptoms of mange. Your vet will examine your dog and confirm the presence of mites. The vet can then prescribe anti-mite treatment and antibiotics when needed. It is always wise to consult a vet before beginning any treatment.
