Dog Supplies Buying Tips

from: Kyle Besser

Just like a small child who needs your complete attention and care, choosing supplies for your dog needs consideration, too. You want your dog to have food, treats, toys, and other necessities that are safe and healthy. There are so many choices for anything that you buy for your dog that it is often confusing or hard to decide.

Dog Food and Treats

Your dog's needs should be the main concern when choosing food and treats. A proper balance of vitamins and minerals should be given, particularly to growing puppies. Sporting and working dog breeds need to have food that will sustain their hyperactive lifestyle. Older dogs need low-calorie food to help them avoid weight gain. This is not an area to scrimp on the budget because your dog's health is at stake. By reading labels and comparing dog foods, you should be able to find a healthy dog food at a reasonable cost. The healthy dog is a reflection of the food he eats.

Dog Leashes and Collars

A collar needs to fit the dog properly to be effective. The size and weight of the dog should be taken into account when choosing the right dog collar. The material from which the collar is made is important too. Nylon is more durable and lightweight and good for dogs who love water. Leather collars are good, but leather will stretch, especially when it gets wet. Leather collars will have to be replaced more often than nylon collars if they get wet frequently. A good choice is a collar that can be personalized with your contact information in case the dog gets loose.

Flea and tick collars are very important for controlling fleas and ticks. A flea and tick collar should fit properly and be used according to the directions.

Most communities require dogs to be on leashes when outside for safety reasons. Dog leashes come in many different materials, lengths and styles - cloth, nylon, retractable, leather, for example. Choose the one that serves its purpose and fits your lifestyle. If you walk your dog in all kinds of weather, nylon is a good choice since it is durable, easy to keep clean and holds up to getting wet.

Dog Toys

The safety of your dog should be the top priority when choosing a dog toy. A dog toy should be large enough so that it can't get lodged in the mouth or be swallowed by your dog. A toy should be small enough for your dog to be able to pick up with his mouth and grip easily. Before giving your dog any child's toy, remove anything that could be chewed off and swalloded, such as eyes and ribbon.

The durability of the toy should be considered, especially for dogs that are aggressive chewers. Light chewers can have those soft vinyl and latex dog toys, but strong chewers should have harder, more durable toys, such as those made from rubber or hard plastic. Examine toys before you purchase them for sharp edges and cracks.

Dog Health Products

Tick and flea infestation and worm control medications are available to help protect your dog from these parasites. There are many brands to choose from, such as Advantix, Advantage and Frontline. It is always best to consult your vet before using any medications.

Your dog's dental health should not be taken for granted. Dog toothbrushes and toothpastes, and other products to clean your dogs teeth are available to help you keep your dog's teeth clean. Dog chews and chew toys also help keep the teeth clean.
