Choosing A Dog Leash
from: Kyle BesserThe right length and width of a leash has more to do with the height of the handler and the size and weight of the dog. A tall handler with a small breed of dog will want a leash long enough to allow enough slack for comfort but not too long to have control of his dog. A short handler will want a shorter lead, especially if they have a large breed dog. Heavier dogs need wider, stronger leads.
You can start a puppy off with those soft colorful puppy equipment, but as the puppy matures and grows physically, functional attire becomes more important. You need a leash of appropriate size to allow enough slack for the dog but short enough to have control over the dog. The strength of the leash is more important, of course, with larger dogs. The choice of material is mostly a matter of preference.
Dog Leather Leashes
Many dog owners prefer leather leashes. Leather leashes come in many varieties, from plain to fancy, flat or braided. Leather leashes are used mostly used by professionals because they don't give as much as those made from other materials, thus giving a correction that the dog will feel immediately when needed.
Leather is easier to grip, and it won't burn or slip from your hands. If a leather leash gets wet, it still is easy to grasp, and it can even become slightly gummy but it won't slip through your hands as easily as a wet nylon leash. A new leather leash may feel stiff but it becomes soft after a few months of use. If you take care of leather properly, it will last years.
Of course, some dogs can chew through leather leashes, but not as fast or as easily as some other materials. Leather is tempting for some dogs to chew, so keep the leash in a place the dog can't access until the leash is needed.
Most leather leashes are brown or black, but you can find them in any color. If you are one of those people who like stylish leashes, they make bejeweled leather leashes to suit anyone's fancy. It is also easy to add a tag with your contact information in case your dog gets loose.
Dog Nylon Leashes
Nylon leashes are very strong but they can be a little rough on the hand if your dog pulls on its leash. Nylon leashes can give your hands blisters from constant pulling. They are fine for smaller dogs and well-trained dogs. . Now, wet nylon? Forget it. It will slide through your fingers when wet.
Over time a nylon leash begins to fray or weaken and need to be replaced, but they are less expensive than leather. They come in a variety of weights and a wide range of colors and styles.
Dog Cotton Leashes
Dog handlers use cotton leashes for their durability and cost effectiveness. They are comfortable in your hand and are easy to find in any local pet supply store. Cotton leashes tend to soften as you handle them. Another benefit of a cotton leash is that they are usually cheaper than nylon or leather leashes, which is a big plus if you have the tendency to leave a leash lying around where your dog can easily find it and chew on it.
Dog Chain Leashes
Chain leashes come in a variety of sizes. If you choose a chain leash, be sure to pick one strong enough for your dog, but be sensible and avoid getting one that is too heavy. For most situations this is an uncomfortable choice of leads, but some people value them because of their strength.
