Pros And Cons Of Dog Head Halter

from: Kyle Besser

The head halter is a hybrid piece of equipment. It is the latest politically correct, morally proper tool that feeds into a dog owner's desire to treat their dog companions like humans. The theory behind a head halter is that where the dog's head goes, sooner or later the rest of the body will follow.

The head halter is an adaptation from halters used for horses. The head halter looks inviting and user friendly. Your dog's reaction is likely to be quite the opposite. He will probably vigorously and determinedly object to the head halter, at least at first. The following list describes the principal advantages of the halter once your dog has learned to accept the effect it has on him:

Benefits of the Head Halter:

*Calming and tranquilizing: A head halter can be helpful with nervous, timid, shy, or hyperactive dogs.

*Equalizing: A head halter can be helpful for small handlers with larger dogs, senior citizens, and handicapped handlers to control their dogs. They require minimum strength to use.

*Muzzling: A head halter can be helpful to curb inappropriate sniffing behavior, whining or barking, some forms of aggression, and play biting or nibbling.

*Head halters are available in pet stores and online, and they are not expensive.

Disadvantages of Head Halter:

*Dogs don't like them: Dogs are uncomfortable with head halters. Their muzzles are very sensitive and they don't like something over their nose. Most dogs appear depressed and subdued while wearing a head halter, and this does not create a positive learning experience.

*Potential for serious damage to your dog's neck: There is great potential for damage to your dog due to the nature of the halter. Because it controls the head, a strong pull by the dog or the handler can do serious damage to the dog's neck. In this case, it is not quite the same principle as the head halter for horses. Most people are smaller than horses, so the halter is used to control the horse's head from below. In contrast, most people are taller than dogs, and any pull or tug is going to be upward and at times simultaneously to the side. Tugging the dog's neck in this way creates great potential for injury.

This is uncomfortable for the dog and it will often keep the dog from pulling. If the dog becomes extremely excited and hits the end of the leash, as young dogs will often do, the head and neck could be snapped back with enough force to cause injury.

*Considered as a transition tool: The head halter is a transition tool at best because it does not teach the dog to assume the responsibility for his behavior. He is being guided by the muzzle instead of being trained by the "Yes" and "No" model.

*Your dog does not learn to accept responsibility for his behaviors. If you use the head halter, the dog is not learning through positive and negative reinforcement what is expected from him.
