Getting The Most Out Of Dog Toys

Otherwise, the toy will lay around and receive no attention from the dog and you will have wasted your money. You want to buy toys that spark an interest or the dog will be curious about.
Provide toys for a variety of uses, one to carry, one to shake, one to roll, one to chase, etc. Many toys can serve different purposes. Keep a variety of different types of dog toys easily accessible.
Rotate your dog's toys weekly, making only four or five toys available at a time. If a toy is out of sight for a period of time, it may be more interesting to your dog when you give it back to him. If your dog has a favorite, you should probably leave that toy out all the time.
Hide and Seek is a fun game for many dogs to play. "Found" toys are often much more attractive. Making an interactive game out of finding toys or treats is a good "rainy day" activity for your dog.
Many of your dog's toys should be interactive. Interactive play is very important for your dog. By focusing on a specific task, like repeatedly
returning a ball or Frisbee, or playing "hide and seek" with treats or toys, your dog can use mental and physical energy in a limited amount of time and space. This greatly reduces stress due to confinement, isolation and boredom. For young, high energy and untrained dogs, interactive play also offers an opportunity for socializing and learning about appropriate and inappropriate behavior with people and other pets, such as jumping up or being mouthy.
Toys For Action
*Very hard rubber toys, like Kong products. These are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes for chewing, fetching and for carrying around.
*Rope toys that are usually available in a bone shape with knotted ends.
*Tennis balls make good fetch toys, but some dogs may chew off and ingest pieces.
Toys For Distraction
*Kong type toys, especially when filled with small treats. The right size Kong can keep a puppy or dog busy for hours. By chewing diligently your dog can access the treats.
*Busy box toys are large hard plastic cubes or balls with hiding places for treats. The dog has to move the toy around with his nose, mouth and paws to access the treats inside. These toys should be large enough that your dog cannot get his mouth around it.
Toys For Comfort
*Soft stuffed toys are not appropriate for all dogs. If your dog chews and tears them apart, you might want to consider a hard chew toy. The stuffed toy should be small enough to carry around and shake.
*An old t-shirt, pillowcase, towel or blanket can be very comforting to a dog, especially if it smells like you. Only use an item you no longer want since it might be destroyed by industrious fluffing, carrying and nosing.
