Dogs Need Toys

from: Kyle Besser

Dog toys are good for both the dog and the dog owner. Dogs like to play. If you don't give them something to play with, they will find something to play with, which is often something you don't want them to have. Dogs like to chew, especially when they are young. If you don't give them something to chew that they like, they will chew on something available to them, which is often your furniture, your shoes, or some other belonging your would rather not have chewed.

You will probably try many different types of dog toys and chews during your dog's lifetime. Some will be a hit with your dog. Others will barely be touched. Over time you will be able to figure out which toys will catch their attention and which ones you shouldn't buy again. By observing their chewing and play habits, you will be able to choose toys that your dog will like and play with.

Squeaky Toys

Squeaky toys come in many shapes and sizes with a squeaker inside. These are almost always a favorite with dogs. Depending on how aggressive your dog chews, these toys can be a safety hazard. If your dog tends to chew the toy until the squeaker is removed, you will have to try ones made of tough rubber or not give them to you dog. You don't want your dog to swallow the squeaker.

Squeaky toys can be very annoying if the dog really likes these type of toys. You can buy "silent" squeaky toys. These squeaky toys actually squeak but at a pitch only the dog can hear. Soniks squeak toys, for example, have 5 to choose from in an outer space theme. Your dog can play with the toy without the squeak driving you nuts. All you will hear is the air going in and out of the squeaker. They are reasonably priced and can be found at most major pet stores.

Rope Toys

Rope dog toys are great for dogs. Rope dog toys help stimulate their minds and help with cleaning their teeth. They are reasonably priced and readily available. Pick ones with a tight knot and no loose strands to keep your dog busy longer. You will have to buy another one as they can wear out easily with constant chewing.

Rawhide Chew

Rawhide chews are not actually toys, but they are a good and healthy way for your dog to have something appropriate to chew on and keep their minds busy. Too much rawhide is not good, so be sure to have other toys for your dog to alternate with.

Rubber Chews And Bones

Dog toys and chews made from rubber are more durable and safer for more aggressive chewers. Rubber chews and toys are safer for your dog and excellent for chewing and will not need to be replaced for a longer time. With the ones that are hollow inside, you have a great place to stick some peanut butter inside for the dog's entertainment and a tasty treat.

Plush Toys

Plush toys are an excellent companion for your dogs when they want to cuddle with it and a great toy for them to chase. Plush toys are safe and soft enough for puppy teeth. The only down side is that they can be expensive and are easy to destroy. They get dirty very quickly if taken outside often. Machine washable ones are a good option.

Dogs love their toys and their toys prove to be very useful for you dog's mind and health. In time, you will learn to choose ones that your dog will like and which ones will last the longest.
