Tips For Safe Dog Toys

from: Kyle Besser

If you have ever had a dog, you probably know from experience that the most expensive dogs toys are the ones your dog chooses for itself from your furnishings, shoes and other stuff. You quickly learn that dog toys are a bargain. You learn that by handing your dog a toy whenever it goes for one of your belongings, you can redirect it to something more acceptable, a dog toy.

There has been an explosion in exciting toy design in the last few years. Never before have such stimulating toys been commercially available for dogs. You can also supplement purchased toys with equally stimulating homemade toys.

Different dogs need different toys. Some dogs can only be trusted with the toughest toys available, while others are not as rough on toys and can have those that are more fragile. Gentle dogs can play with squeaky toys. Soft latex tends to be more dog resistant than hard plastic. Gentle dogs can also have stuffed animal toys, but be sure to remove any plastic eyes or noses before you give them to your dog. You can buy these toys at cheaply at thrift stores and yard sales.

When evaluating the safety of any toy, consider:

1. The toy should not be small enough that it could be inhaled or swallowed whole.

2. The toy should not have parts that could be pulled or chewed off and swallowed.

3. The toy should not have any sharp parts.

4. Avoid linear items such as pantyhose, strings, ribbons and rubber bands that could be swallowed. These can be particularly dangerous for a dog.

5. Use chewable toys with caution and under supervision. If your dog can swallow a big piece of it, it is probably not really safe to give a dog. Bones and hooves have been responsible for many cracked rear teeth, resulting in expensive dental bills.

6. If your dog is removes the squeakers from squeaky toys, only give squeaky toys when you can supervise.

7. Avoid toys stuffed with unsafe fillings, such as beans.

8. Never give your dog a container in which the its head could become lodged. Dogs cannot pull these containers off and could suffocate when they became stuck.

9. Never leave a dog unsupervised with a toy that contains a battery.

Some toys require a person on the other end, such as balls, tug toys and chase toys. Don't think you can hand your dog a toy that requires a person and expect the dog to be entertained while you're gone. The dog will turn to a toy that doesn't require your presence, such as the leg of your table or a slipper. Dog toys can be invaluable to entertain your dog without having your belongings ruined.
