The Value Of The Sit And Stay Commands

Teaching the "Sit" and "Stay" commands is the best way to start to teach vocabulary to a dog. Through this initial discipline, which can be done very gently and without a choke collar on a very young puppy, the dog learns how to stop and listen. Then they can learn.
Sit And Stay Dog Training Commands
"Sit" means plant your rump. "Stay" means freeze. Even an untrained dog should know the "Sit" and "Stay" dog training commands How else can you keep order and control? You want your dog to sit while you wait at the vet, while getting his collar on, while waiting for his food dish to be filled, waiting to cross the street, and while being groomed. There are also times when you need your dog to stay in one place.
What you request in the "Sit" and "Stay" dog training commands is clear and understandable to the dog. In the initial teaching, the dog can absorb the concepts of both words. He may, for example, try to move from the spot. When you return him to it, he gets the "Stay" part. If he tries to lie down, figuring if he's going to be stuck in the spot he might as well get comfortable, and you return him to the "Sit" position, he learns the meaning of the word "Sit."
Your dog learns two dog training commands that stand for two separate concepts. In addition, he learns how to learn. You will readily see the difference in the intelligent look on his face. You are placing your dog in a calm position from which it is easier to focus his attention on new learning.
Furthermore, the "Stay" dog training command covers a multitude of situations. It is the beginning of teaching your dog longer commands and important concepts. It is a great aid in keeping the dog from harm, such as to stop the dog from running out into the street after a ball.
The Wait Dog Training Command
Some dog owners do not like to use the dog training command "Stay" except in the formal sense, the freeze on command. To let the dog know he is not going along or not getting out of the car just then, they use "Wait" instead of "Stay." The wait dog training command can also communicate something important to the dog who is off-leash trained.
It would make more sense to say "Wait" as your dog bounds toward the corner or toward the exit of the park than to say "Stay," which would be asking him to freeze on the spot. The "Wait" dog training command tells him not to cross the street, not to leave the park or not to rush out the door until you tell him to do so. "Wait" allows him to be at ease while waiting. The wait command is definitely worth teaching.
