Should You Give Rawhide To Your Dog
from: Kyle BesserDog owners often have a lot of questions about rawhide dog chews. Many dog owners wonder if rawhide dog chew are safe to give to their dogs. The first question commonly asked about rawhide dog chews is about quality.
Quality Rawhide
Better quality rawhide bones are wrapped tighter and have more rawhide per bone than others. Dense rawhide bones last longer and are a better value. Cheaper rawhide bones are not nearly as thick and the knotted ends are often loosely tied.
Better quality rawhide bones generally come from the United States or one of the beef producing countries of South America. American production processes and sanitation practices for rawhide bones are much better and more highly regulated than most other countries producing rawhide bones.
The country of origin is not a guarantee of quality rawhide bones. There are many rawhide bones made in the US that are not of high quality. There is usually no telling where store bought rawhide bones come from. It is better to buy rawhide bones from a store you can trust.
Bleaching Rawhide
Many rawhide manufacturers bleach their rawhide using one or more chemicals. There is no value in bleaching rawhide other than to make it whiter, thinking whiter would appeal more to dog owners, perhaps because it looks cleaner.
Bleaching can remove some of the natural flavor dogs love. The chemicals used today to bleach rawhide are not known to cause health problems, but do you want a product with added chemicals when you can have one without added chemicals. Dogs certainly do not care if their rawhide bones are white or cream colored.
Is Rawhide Safe For Dogs?
The second most asked question about rawhide is whether or not chewing rawhide is healthy for puppies. A few years ago, one of the major medical schools in the US conducted a laboratory test to answer this question. The results showed that in the groups of test dogs, there were no ill effects from chewing rawhide, even for those given rawhide three times a day.
Dogs will swallow pieces of rawhide. These pieces of rawhide will usually pass easily through the digestive tract with no problems. Choking or intestinal obstruction with rawhide is very rare, but since it could potentially occur, common sense prevention measures should be taken. A dog with a rawhide chew product should not be left unsupervised.
Some dogs may quickly chew and swallow large pieces of rawhide. When your dog has chewed on a piece of rawhide to the point of it becoming soft, take that rawhide chew away and substitute with another rawhide chew. After the softened rawhide has had time to dry and harden again, it can be given back to the dog.
Chewing rawhide has the beneficial effect of removing plaque from the dog's teeth and keeping them cleaner. This is important to help fight periodontal disease in adult dogs.
Buy quality rawhide from a source you can trust. Rawhide will not only satisfy your dog's natural urge to chew, it will also help keep him healthy.
