Are Pig Ears And Rawhide Safe For Dogs

from: Kyle Besser

Rawhide chews and pigs ears are two of the choices for dog owners to give their dogs as chew treats, but many dog owners wonder whether rawhide chews and pigs ears as dog chew treats are safe to give their dogs.

Is Rawhide Safe For Dogs?

A few years ago, one of the major medical schools in the US conducted a laboratory test to answer the question. The results showed that in the groups of test dogs, there were no ill effects from chewing rawhide, even for those dogs given rawhide three times a day.

Rawhide dog treats come in many shapes and sizes, such as rings, sticks, lollipops and shoes. Some rawhide dog treats are even flavored. Some dogs will prefer one shape or flavor of rawhide dog treats over another. Some of these rawhide dog treat shapes are formed out of ground pieces of rawhide which smaller dogs may find more palatable. Some rawhide dog treats are made out of many thin layers of rawhide, which should be a longer lasting dog chew treat for your dog.

Dogs should be supervised when eating rawhide dog treats which may break into smaller pieces and become a choking hazard. When dogs swallow pieces of rawhide, these pieces will usually pass easily through the digestive tract. Choking or intestinal obstruction with rawhide is very rare, but since it could potentially occur, common sense prevention measures should be taken.

When your dog has chewed on a piece of rawhide to the point of it becoming soft, take that rawhide dog chew away and substitute another rawhide dog chew. After the softened rawhide dog chew has had time to dry and harden again, it can be given back to the dog.

Are Pig Ears Safe For Dogs?

Most of the pig ears dog chews manufactured in the United States are safety inspected and are safe for dogs.

Pig ears dog chews have a high fat content and should certainly not be the dog treat of choice for dogs with weight problems or those prone to pancreatitis. If given in large quantities, pig ears dog chews can cause loose stools. It is best to use pig ears dog chews in moderation.

There have been some cases of Salmonella being transmitted through pig ears dog chews. After handling pig ears dog chews or any meat based treats for your dog, you should wash your hands with soap and warm water. Keep pig ears dog chews off food preparation and serving areas.
